OR52
Royal Holloway University of London
7-9 September 2010
This year’s OR Society Conference, OR52, will be held from 7th to 9th September 2010 at Royal Holloway University of London, which is located near Egham in Surrey, only 19 miles from central London (see www.conferences.rhul.ac.uk for more info).

Travelling to OR52 - As you may be aware, the London Underground maintenance and engineering staff are staging a 24-hour strike at 17:00 on Monday 6 September. Station and revenue staff, operational managers, drivers and signallers are also planning strike action on that day. Clearly, if these strikes go ahead, they are highly likely to cause serious delays to delegates travelling to OR52 by public transport from or via London. If you plan to travel via London on 6 or 7 September you may wish to allow additional time for the journey or consider alternative routes to the conference. |

Royal Holloway was founded by two Victorian visionaries, Elizabeth Jesser Reid and Thomas Holloway. The famous Founder's Building, one of the most spectacular university buildings in the world, was officially opened by Queen Victoria in 1886.

Some 30 parallel streams offer a wide variety of interest on many topics including: Community OR; Criminal Justice; Data Mining and Forecasting; Finance; Health; Logistics and Supply Chains; Multicriteria Decision Aid; Optimisation; OR in Developing Countries; OR in Education; OR Practice & Consultancy; Risk, Reliability and Maintenance and many more.
The opening plenary speaker will be Professor David Fisk, who holds the BP/Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Engineering for Sustainable Development at Imperial College, London. The other plenary speakers will be Professor Jeff Griffiths, winner of the Society’s 2009 Beale Medal, and Professor Richard Eglese, President of the Society, who will give his presidential address. The President’s Medal will again be awarded at the conference with the short-listed candidates presenting their reports of OR in practice.
We also have, for the first time, a single-day stream on the Wednesday aimed specifically at people whose primary role is to use OR to influence the decisions of the organisation they work for. 'Making an impact - maximising the benefits from OR' will spotlight examples from major commercial organisations, explore best practice and shared challenges for this community, provide a window into relevant academic developments and allow plenty of networking opportunities. The stream will break to allow participants to attend the conference plenary session at which the President’s Medal case study presentations will be given, but the stream will then resume, so those wishing to attend throughout the day will not be able to participate in any of the excursions.
Please note that, for those unable to commit to the full three days, single day registration for the conference is available for just £141 (inc. VAT). The Wednesday evening banquet is an optional extra for those wanting to extend their day into the evening.
 |
There will also be the full social programme that is customary at OR Society conferences, including a bar quiz, conference banquet (pre banquet drinks being held in the Picture Gallery - see left) and a choice of excursions including a historical tour of the Founder’s Building, a walking tour of Windsor, a visit to the Savill Garden in Windsor Great Park (pictured right), and a boat trip from Windsor to Runnymede. |
