For its 2007 annual conference, the
OR Society is heading to Edinburgh – a city that certainly
lives up to its reputation as one of the most beautiful cities in
Britain. This historic city is one of the world’s most
vibrant and cosmopolitan places and one of Europe's
major tourist destinations.
The three-day conference programme contains a mixture
of plenary
sessions given by keynote speakers (Mark Elder from
Simul8 and Ajaz Ahmed, a leading entrepreneur) and parallel
streams, covering all aspects of OR. In addition there is a comprehensive
social programme.

The conference will be held at the University of
Edinburgh where the delegates’ bedrooms in Chancellors Court were
newly constructed in 2003. Many of the sessions will be held
in St Leonard’s
Pollock Halls of Residence St Leonard's Hall which, until World War II
was a school for girls called St Trinnean's. This Baronial
style building, with its pepper-pot turrets and a tower, is reputed
to be the inspiration for the St
Trinian's School in the novels of Ronald
Searle and the building was used in the ‘comedy’ films
of the 1950s and 1960s. Fortunately, school uniform is no longer
obligatory for conference delegates.

| The Medal competition
seeks entries from practitioners to demonstrate the value
of OR work in industry, commerce or government. Three excellent
President’s Medal entries
were presented at last year’s conference. We hope that
there will be record numbers of members wanting to enter
the President’s Medal competition in Edinburgh – practitioners
are reminded to start identifying suitable pieces of work
now! More Information |

The OR Society's annual conference is an important event in delivering its charitable aims as it has the potential to reach a large number of both members and non-members. The cost of attending a conference can soon mount up, and not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to claim the cost through their employer. There are a number of potential attendees for whom the conference costs represent a significant barrier and who would not only benefit personally from attendance, but the conference itself and the wider OR community could gain value. The OR Society is offering up to five assisted places at the conference covering the cost of registration and accommodation. Further details.

| A full social
programme will, as usual, be on offer and we’re confident
that delegates will be spoilt for choice for interesting
things to do and see in this fascinating part of the world. |
