York MinsterThis year The OR Society’s Conference returns to the historic City of York.  The conference will be held at the University of York’s beautiful lakeside campus (above).

The city’s medieval walls, which are still largely intact, with their gates – or ‘bars’ as they are called – ensured safety of the citizens in mediaeval times.  The ancient bars still stand largely unchanged from the design laid down by their mediaeval architects as a symbol of welcome.  Inside the city walls is a maze of narrow twisting streets, known as Snickleways, mostly laid down during the Viking era, although Stonegate, amongst others, has been a thoroughfare since Roman times.

The world famous Minster is Northern Europe’s largest Gothic cathedral, built on the site of the Roman headquarters building and smaller Norman churches. (See http://www.york-tourism.co.uk for further information).

Plenary Sessions

The plenary sessions will feature Michael Power, Retired Chief Operating Officer, London 2012 and Sue Merchant independent consultant and President of The OR Society.

The President’s Medal will again be awarded at the conference with the short-listed candidates presenting their reports of OR in practice.

Keynote Talks
The keynote talks will be a little different this year. We have asked some of the best-known people in their field to organise a stream and to give a keynote on the topic “50 years of …” This means that the set of keynote papers will be a very collectable item in years to come. Moreover, the best of these will be selected for a Special Issue of the Journal of the OR Society – further details to be announced.

Social Programme

As ever at OR Society conferences there is a full social programme to entertain delegates and facilitate networking.

A welcome drinks reception will be held for early arrivals on Monday evening, and an OR Society conference wouldn’t be the same without the traditional Bar Quiz on Tuesday evening.

In the latter part of Wednesday afternoon delegates will have an opportunity to see something of York, going on a guided walking tour of the city or a vintage open top bus tour. Alternatively you may visit the York Brewery or the Yorkshire Air Museum or perhaps get face-to-face with Vikings at the Jorvik Viking Centre.

The conference banquet on the Wednesday evening will take place at the National Railway Museum in York, where following a drinks reception and a trip on the Yorkshire Wheel delegates will have the opportunity to explore the exhibits, which comprises the world’s largest collection of historic railway vehicles.

Getting There

York is less than 2 hours from London by train, and is served by fast connections from Scotland as well as frequent through services from the North West of England, the Midlands, Wales and the South West. There is excellent motorway access via M1/A1 and M62. Ample parking will be available on campus (for a fee) for those travelling by car.
