OR51
University of Warwick, 8th to 10th September 2009

Warwick Castle

Frances O’Brien and Ruth Davies are delighted to be organising OR51 from September 8th to 10th, 2009. OR51 will have a programme, full of interest, appealing to a wide range of individuals. It is located at the University Warwick, a dynamic university with a large well-known OR group. We anticipate an extensive and interesting scientific programme with contributions from both academics and practitioners. We are planning that the plenaries and some keynotes should address contemporary concerns such as climate change and the financial crisis. The plenaries, streams, coffee and exhibitions will be co-located, with all but two rooms under one roof and all within easy access.

The University is situated on the outskirts of Coventry, close to the Warwickshire countryside and only one hour and ten minutes from London by train. Local sites of interest include Coventry cathedral and the guildhall, Kenilworth castle, the Heritage motor museum, the National motorcycle museum, Warwick castle and Shakespeare’s birthplace.

Social Programme

Walking tour of Coventry - A city that has taken 1,000 years to evolve, has three cathedrals, was once a medieval walled city and briefly the capital of England. Also worth viewing is St Mary's Guildhall which dates back to 1342 and was once where William Shakespeare played and is the trial scene in Adam Bede by George Eliot.

The first twin city in the World was with Coventry, while it’s also the birth of the concept of purpose built pedestrian precincts.

The Coventry Transport Museum is considered the best of its type in the World and remembers the engineering heritage of the city, where once was based over 130 car companies. It has two floors of displays which also includes the two fastest cars in the World.  It’s currently home to a very good exhibition on Doctor Who. The theme tune to the TV programme was written by a Coventry person.

Stratford upon Avon tours are based around the five houses associated with William Shakespeare. Starting with the Birthplace, then Nash's House, Halls Croft, Anne Hathaway's Cottage and Mary Ardens House.

Bancroft Gardens located next to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, have recently been rebuilt  and now includes a memorial to four fireman who lost their lives in a fire 2/3 years ago. The coach trip will pass all the houses, with a photo stop at Anne Hathaway's.

Kenilworth Castle - The greatest ruin in all England now looked after by English Heritage. Famous for being the location of the longest siege in English history. Once owned by Robert Dudley Earl of Leicester and now home to a re-constructed  Elizabethan Garden unique in this country and visited by Elizabeth I, on her 19 day visit. Its romantic setting helps it standout.
