use of Operations Research in defence is wide and varied
from "Hard
OR" (modelling and simulation) through to "Soft OR" techniques
and methods supporting decision makers directly .
Defence covers a wide array of topics from Capability
Management (How should we be developing future military
capability), Equipment Acquisition (What is the best
piece of kit to buy), Combat Operations (On the ground
analysis in warfighting operations) and Peace Keeping
(How do we measure the military effectiveness of
Peace Keepers). The defence stream
aims to provide a vehicle through which defence OR
practitioners can expose the application of OR methods
in the defence arena and provide a forum to expose
lessons learnt from these studies to a wider audience.
