  Location

This year The OR Society Conference returns to the historic City of York. The conference will be held at the University of York's beautiful lakeside campus.

The city’s medieval walls, which are still largely intact, with their gates - or ‘bars’ as they are called -ensured the safety of the citizens in mediaeval times. The ancient bars still stand largely unchanged from the design laid down by their mediaeval architects as a symbol of welcome. Inside the city walls is a maze of narrow twisting streets, known as Snickleways, mostly laid down during the Viking era, although Stonegate, amongst others, has been a thoroughfare since Roman times.

The world famous Minster is Northern Europe’s largest Gothic cathedral, built on the site of the Roman headquarters building and smaller Norman churches.

  Social programme

As ever at ORS conferences there is a full social programme to entertain delegates and facilitate networking. Brian Lehaney will be the quizmaster for the bar quiz on Tuesday night. In the latter part of Wednesday afternoon delegates will have an opportunity to see something of York, sailing down the Ouse on a barge (weather permitting), going on a guided walking tour of the city or visiting a local brewery.

The conference banquet on the Wednesday evening will take place at the National Railway Museum in York, where following a reception delegates will have the opportunity to explore the exhibits, which comprises the world's largest collection of historic railway vehicles, and where it is hoped the recently-rescued Flying Scotsman will be on display. Dinner will be served on Platform Three and the ‘Swing Time Jazz Band’ will play at intervals during the evening.

For those of you who feel energetic enough to visit the Gym during your stay, the sports centre is situated next to Psychology. The Gym opening Hours are Sunday to Friday 0900 - 2200, Saturday 0900  - 1800. The Gym Manager’s telephone number is (Mr Smith) 01904 433853. Cost is £3 per session.

  Accommodation and booking

Two grades of accommodation are offered at the conference: in Langwith College, where many of the sessions will be held, en-suite and standard single rooms are available, standard rooms all have a hand basin. Five minutes' walk away across the campus is Alcuin College, with en-suite single rooms.
